Luncheon among the Masters lecture

Luncheon among the Masters Lecture was located at the Art Museum of South Texas Corpus Christi. With visiting artists named Sergei Ispov, Walter McConel, and Jennifer Ling. Sergei Ispov is a ussian artists who mainly works in ceramics. The piece he was particularly noted for during this luncheon lecture was called Risen. It was a gigantic sculpture made of stoneware, slip, and glaze at least 7ft tall person with elaborate paintings on them in various symbolic undertones. Having layers upon layers of imagery using people within this piece he noted that there was no particular story or deep meaning with this piece but he rather loved to draw and often did so in his studio practice. However he did make this rather large sculpture because he had wanted to have an impact upon the viewer and draw their attention he explained throughout the lecture. Having done such a larger than life sculpture he also said that he would never do such a large figure sculpture in the near future so I was personally very happy to have seen it at the gallery viewing. This sculpture personally was something that I would have never imagined creating since I am a rather new in sculpting with clay in ceramics but I am highly envious of the range of glazes and bright colores he utilized within the small portraits within the overall large male figure praying up to the sky and distressed woman on the back of the same figure.

The second artist that was featured that evening was Walter McConnel. Walters piece he was particularly noted on within the lecture was his piece that resembled a nudist stupa that is used in a form of religious worship. It was a compilation of mass produced mold used for everyday sale in pottery that would be used more for a commercial usage rather than gallery level works. And because he used these rather random assortment of commercial cast pieces it gave a new tone and feeling to what a gallery sculpture piece should be and what was considered desirable to own within someone's home. The way he stacked and leveled a lot of these sculptures to create one large sculpture was something that I very much liked because he took objects that people didn’t necessarily liked and turned it into a much larger object giving it meaning and allowed for the audience members to have deeper thought process on what was this sculpture about.

The last artist within the lecture was named Jennifer Ling. Jennifer Ling’s sculptures were several small scale works that resemble women’s makeup compact however it was made from several types of bought hair and very fine delicate porcelain. She explained however within the talk that she created many of these pieces very carefully and because she felt as if she were making women themselves based on that personal connection of there hair. The women’s hair is a sort of identifying trademark to a person and that their hair reflects this as it was once apart of them. Each hair sculpture she made carried its characteristic of that particular person in a way of feeling, texture, smell, and natural hair types ( like wavy, straight hair etc.). The quiet nature of these pieces really have a stronger impact and message upon hearing her speak thought out the lecture. She was one of my favorite artists at this event due to their delicate hand along and attention to detail she had created each sculpture. In attention I learned a lot about her personal views on feminity and hair care. In addition i found it very interesting that she got the idea of making these compacts by buying a random beautiful tin at an Asian market and discovering it was actually makeup. And from there she was learning about hair and how there was actually a quite successful market for the buying and selling of hair from people all over the world particularly in Asia due to Asian hair being able to withstand more conditioning, dying, and styling overall Jennifer explained.

Overall I really enjoyed the lecture and hearing what the artist had to say about their sculptures and why they made the decisions they did to get the finished product. I would definitely go again to see any future work that any three of these artists listed.
